Loki Jorgenson - chief instructor, maelstrom Martial Arts
History
Born in 1963, Loki Jorgenson began his martial training in Shorinjiryu Kenkokan karatedo at a dojo in Kingston, Ontario in 1983. After achieving shodan rank, Loki went on to train in a variety of other arts including Wing Chun and Eight Animal Ba Gua (sifu Eric Tuttle) before finally encountering the Filipino martials arts in 1988. Loki then began serious training in Pekiti-Tirsia kali with then-Mataas na Guro Philip Gelinas (now Mandala Tuhon) in Montreal and has continuously trained in Pekiti-Tirsia ever since. He has also trained in the Philippines and at seminars in N.America with the grandmaster of the Pekiti-Tirsia system Grand Tuhon Leo T. Gaje, jr. and as well with Tuhon William McGrath and Magino'o Guro Dan Inosanto.
Loki Jorgenson is the second-highest ranked Pekiti-Tirsia instructor in Canada (after Mandala Tuhon Philip), and one of the top ten in North America, as recognized by Grand Tuhon Leo T. Gaje, jr. of Bacolod City, Philippines. Loki was granted ranking of Mandala Magino'o by Grand Tuhon Leo T. Gaje through Tuhon Philip Gelinas of Pekiti-Tirsia Canada in 2011.
In addition, Loki has trained in pencak silat Jati Wisesa, pencak silat Mande Muda, Lacoste/Inosanto kali, Jun Fan/Jeet Kune Do, krabi krabong Buddhai Sawan and Dog Brothers Martial Arts. He has also fought numerous times at the Dog Brothers' Gathering of the Pack in Los Angeles and achieved the Dog Brothers fighter's name "Tricky Dog". Loki is also a certified instructor with the Dog Brothers, in Jati Wisesa, in Krabi Krabong, and at the Inosanto Academy.
Loki has recently discovered that, especially for the SouthEast Asian arts, dance and performance are an integral part of the fight. As Confuscius once said:
Give no man a sword who cannot dance
Taking this seriously, Loki performs traditional martial dance with Kathara Cultural Theatre and dances fire sword, staff, fans, and fire shield with Radiant Heat.
